Basketball Signature Moves 28: Kobe Bryant's Pump Fake Pivot Jump Shot

Kobe Bryant explains how to do the Pump Fake Pivot Jump Shot from Nike Signature Moves series

"Don't let great defense stop you. Exploit tight coverage with fakes and spins to get the looks you want. "
  1. "Triple threat position
The triple threat position gives you a starting point for a range of options: shooting, passing and driving. Get into the triple threat position to face up your defender.
  2. Jab step
Use the jab set to create space and your defender's reaction. While maintaining your pivot foot make quick step motions with your other foot to back them up or throw them off balance. You can also fake passes or fake shots to get the extra edge you need to set up your play.
  3. Drive-by
Once your defender is shaken by the jab step take it to the hole strong, watching for backup defenders who might close in.
  4. Pump fake & pivot
If your defender is able to recover and get back in position or if help moves in to cover, beat them with a sudden stop and a strong pump fake. The fake will get the defender in the air for the block or put him off balance enough to use your pivot foot to spin around him. After the pivot you should be open to take the shot or pass to an open man. "

Basketball Signature Moves 4: Bruce Bowen's Man To Man Defense

Bruce Bowen is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. He loves to guard the other team best players such as Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Steve Nash and many more. Bowen said defense is "a little bit of talent and a lot of work; being able to take on the challenge of going up against the top guys, even when you didn't win that battle. Being able to come back the next day and try again — I think that's the most important thing."

Below is a tutorial from Bowen himself regarding man to man defense

Basketball Signature Moves 2: Michael Jordan's Fadeaway

Although many NBA players such as Kobe Bryant and Karl Malone use fadeaway regularly, Michael Jordan is still the best at doing fadeaway. Fadeaway is the most difficult version of a jump shot, because you are shooting the ball while at the same time you are jumping away from your opponent. You create separation from your defender, so it is very tough for your defender to block your shot.

For all you "shooter" out there, you should learn to incorporate fadeaway to your game. Instead of playing only as a spot up shooter, why not expand your game and learn to create your own shot.

My suggestion is for you to first practice shooting while you are jumping backward. If you like challenge, you may also try shooting while you are jumping leftward or rightward. I know this is not easy, but this is very important because this will train you to shoot while you are moving. I think being a non stationary shooter (being able to shoot on the move) is what separates good shooter from great shooter. Start shooting from close to the basket first. After you knock down several shots, then move further away from the basket.

Here are tutorial videos on how to do fadeaway from the master himself

Basketball Signature Moves 1: Olajuwon's Dream Shake

Hakeem Olajuwon is one of my favorite basketball player of all time. In my opinion, he has the most gorgeous post moves and one of them is the Dream Shake. The Dream Shake is a combination of several spin moves, fakes and counter moves. Once mastered, it is pretty much unguardable. Olajuwon said "The Dream Shake was actually one of my soccer moves which I translated to basketball. It would accomplish one of three things: one, to misdirect the opponent and make him go the opposite way; two, to freeze the opponent and leave him devastated in his tracks; three, to shake off the opponent and giving him no chance to contest the shot."

For those of you who want to learn about pivoting and footwork, this is the guy you want to learn from. The Dream Shake has so many different combinations. Here is step by step instruction on how to do 1 variation of the Dream Shake

  1. do a cross over
  2. drive to the basket
  3. fake a layup
  4. spin counterclockwise
  5. fake another layup
  6. performed an up-and-under move to score
